Topic Presenter: Josh Pearce, Director and Senior Environmental Geochemist at Mine Waste Management Pty Ltd.

Date: Wednesday, February 23rd 2022

Time: 12:30 to 1:30 pm (Australian Western Standard Time)

Presentation Overview:

How much data is enough data? How do I design an acid and metalliferous drainage (AMD) scope of work to adequately identify AMD hazards? What assessments do I need to consider so that I can comparatively assess alternative management and closure options? These are just a few of the questions a closure practitioner not only needs to ask but should also understand how to resolve.

Josh will outline typical approaches that closure practitioners should consider when scoping AMD assessment programs to sufficiently understand and plan for AMD risk at closure. This will include giving consideration to:

  • Different AMD hazards – do our materials present an acidic, neutral metalliferous, and/or saline drainage risk?

  • Data now vs data later – does materials characterisation end at the approvals stage?

  • AMD assessment complexity – how do we use the AMD risk assessment to guide program complexity?

  • AMD management stakeholders – who do we need on our AMD management team so that our selected closure option can be executed?

Presenter Profile: Josh is a Senior Environmental Geochemist with 13 years’ experience in environmental consultancy, now specialising in the development and implementation of mineral waste management systems. He has extensive experience with iron ore mines in WA’s north-west region, as well as having worked across a diverse range of commodities across Australia as well as within Africa, Asia, Europe, and Central and North America.

Josh has specific experience in the development and implementation of AMD management systems requiring engagement and adoption by multiple disciplines across all stages of mine life. Most recently Josh has been involved in the development and implementation of global management standards for two multi-national mining companies with a combined reach of more than 80 sites globally. This has required Josh to work closely with key site and management personnel across many different disciplines to develop operational mineral waste management procedures that are easy to implement resulting in effective adoption of management strategies.

In addition to his technical role, Josh is the Operational Director for Green Road Group companies Mine Waste Management, Hydro Geochem Group, and Resource Stack. Green Road is a group of companies with common values and aspirations that provide simple, creative, and sustainable solutions to the resources industry.
