Topic Presenter: Peter Dunn - Sibelco, Sustainability Manager

Date:  16 March 2022

Time: 12:30 to 1:30 pm (Australian Western Standard Time)

Presentation Overview:  On the 31 December 2019, the Queensland government ended mining on Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island) to transition the island to an alternative non-mining economy. With almost 4,500 ha of mine affected land to be rehabilitated back to national park grade bushland across three Environmental Authorities with loss of tenure over native title land on an island with ongoing political interest; Sibelco Australia (the incumbent miner) is responsible for a challenging and complex rehabilitation and closure project.

As Sustainability Manager for Sibelco Australia since 2012, Peter will provide a case study of a live and ongoing rehabilitation and closure project on the sand island of Minjerribah and provide insights into the regulatory, stakeholder and political challenges and opportunities confronted by Sibelco, solutions and approaches employed, and lessons learned along the way.

Presenter Profile: Peter is the Principal Environmental Consultant and owner of PD Environment. Peter has over 18 years’ experience in government, property, aviation, mining and extractive sectors in Australia, the UK and Asian regions. Peter’s experience has diversified in impact assessment, environmental risk management, Aboriginal cultural heritage and engagement, energy efficiency, carbon abatement and mine site rehabilitation.
