Presentation Overview:  

Mount Gibson Iron has operated Iron Ore projects across WA since 2003. Mount Gibson Iron successfully mined Tallering Peak, Extension Hill and Iron Hill in the mid-west to completion and continues to operate its Koolan Island operations. Since completion of the operations at Tallering Peak, Extension Hill and Iron Hill and progressively at Koolan Island Mount Gibson has been rehabilitating the land to return it to a state that is safe, stable, non-polluting and self-sustaining.

This presentation looks at the tools Mount Gibson has used to understand the temporal trajectory of rehabilitation at these sites; the things that have worked and the things that needed to be changed to achieve better outcomes. From experience, it is known that one size does not fit all, and certain methodologies are not suitable for all scenarios. Mount Gibson has reached a maturity in its closure planning that is now moving away from “tried and true” monitoring methodologies and starting to utilise technology and understanding multiple lines of evidence approach to closure.

Presenter Profile

Jacob is the Senior Closure Specialist at Mount Gibson Iron. As an environmental professional, Jacob has been fortunate to have worked as a consultant, for mining companies and as a regulator. This combination of experience has given Jacob a unique perspective on environmental management and regulation, especially in the mining arena. With an understanding of the drivers of both the regulator and industry, Jacob can provide insights into finessing the divide between the drivers of the state and production. As a regulator, Jacob had a deep dive into the Mining Act 1978, its application to environmental management and how to navigate environmental stewardship when the legislation is more or less silent on the issue.
