Presentation summary:

The grazing post mining end landuse (PMLU) has been popular and well accepted. The mining proponent can typically gain acceptance of the PMLU as a) it is already practiced beyond the mine lease and b) if successfully implemented can leave behind an economic activity that can help support the remaining community. Yet the Office of the Queensland Mine Rehabilitation Commissioner in a recent review found that “the leading practices for establishing and demonstrating grazing as a PMLU are not clearly defined.” This talk will focus on the technical aspects that makes grazing problematic from a risk perspective if closed mine waste landforms are to achieve safe, stable, sustainable, and non-polluting goals into the long term.
